IOC to investigate China gymnasts' ages (AP) - The International Olympic Committee said Friday it had asked gymnastics officials to investigate whether the Chinese women's gymnastics team that won the gold medal had underage athletes, saying "more information has come to light." "We've asked the gymnastics federation to look into it further," IOC spokeswoman Giselle Davies said.
MLB braces for replay delays (AP) - As if major league games aren't long enough already, now there will be replay delays. Sometime before the end of the regular season, Major League Baseball will start allowing umpires to review video to determine boundary calls on home runs, such as whether they cleared fences or went by the foul pole in fair territory.
NFLPA head Gene Upshaw dies at 63 (AP) -

Upshaw worked a quarter century as union head helped get NFL football players free agency and the riches that came with it. Upshaw died at age 63 on Wednesday night at his home near California's Lake Tahoe, of pancreatic cancer, which was diagnosed only last Sunday, the NFL Players Association said Thursday.

Gene Upshaw, a towering lineman on the football field who went on to win untold millions of dollars for NFL players as their union leader, has died at age 63. Upshaw had a Hall of Fame career as a guard for the Oakland Raiders -- a team that won two of the three Super Bowls it reached during his 15 years in a black and silver jersey.

Playing in calm morning conditions at demanding Ridgewood Country Club, Mahan split the fairway with his opening drive, then watched his 98-yard sand wedge shot spin back into the hole for an unlikely eagle.


Pavano to start for Yankees on Saturday (AP) - Carl Pavano, written off by New York Yankees fans, will return and start for the team on Saturday at Baltimore. The Yankees chose the right-handed Pavano over fellow righty Phil Hughes, who is working his way back from a fractured rib. "We liked the way (Pavano) was throwing the ball and we felt that Hughes needed some more work," manager Joe Girardi said before Thursday's game against the Blue...
US women's soccer tops Brazil for gold (AP) - They came to the Beijing Olympics as a team trying to find its way, still adjusting to a new coach and each other, still smarting from a loss that brought humiliation on and off the field. They dropped their first game, hardly an auspicious start for a country that had lost only one other in three Olympics.
Lee wins 18th, Sizemore powers Indians (AP) -

An 18-2 record pitching for any team is impressive. Cliff Lee's season has been truly remarkable because he's been practically unbeatable for team that's been less than mediocre. The Indians' left-hander recorded his AL-best 18th victory and won his seventh straight decision as Cleveland beat the Kansas City Royals 10-3 on Thursday.


Rams RB Jackson signs 6-year, $44M deal (AP) -

Steven Jackson signed a six-year, $44 million contract, ended a 27-day holdout, and was on the field for practice with the St. Louis Rams on Thursday. And all was forgiven. Coach Scott Linehan, who conducted a month of practices without the centerpiece of the offense, joked that he gave Jackson "a big hug" and then asked for a loan.
