NFL suspends Vikings LT McKinnie 4 games (AP) - The NFL suspended Minnesota Vikings left tackle Bryant McKinnie for four games without pay Friday for violating the league's personal conduct policy. McKinnie has pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from a street brawl outside a Miami nightclub in February. He will be eligible to return to the Vikings' active roster on Sept., following the team's Sept.
Bolt easily wins 100 meters in Zurich (AP) - Usain Bolt easily won the 100 meters in 9.83 seconds Friday night in the Weltklasse meet, his first competition since record-shattering performance in the Beijing Olympics. Bolt's return was upstaged by Pamela Jelimo, the 18-year-old Kenyan who won the women's 800 in 1:54.01, the fastest time in more than two decades and the third fastest in history at the distance.
Former champ Kuznetsova falls at US Open (AP) -

Former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova became the last upset victim at the U.S. Open, beaten by 28th-ranked Katarina Srebotnik 6-3, 6-7 (1), 6-3 in the third round Friday. A day after No. 1 Ana Ivanovic lost to 188th-ranked Julie Coin, the third-seeded Kutznetsova was eliminated. The Russian won the tournament in 2004 and finished second last year.


Soriano's HR helps Cubs run streak to 7 (AP) -

Alfonso Soriano hit a tiebreaking homer in the seventh inning, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-2 Friday for their seventh straight win, Soriano's first homer in 15 days and 23rd of the season came off Clay Condrey (3-4). Chicago made the most of four hits and improved its record to a major league-best 85-50, including 51-19 at Wrigley Field.


Bad elbow sends Red Sox's Beckett to DL (AP) - Josh Beckett was put on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of a strained right elbow after the Boston ace was examined by Dr. James Andrews. "Everything came out, the word would be awesome, from our standpoint," manager Terry Francona said. "Everything was clean. There were a number of tests and Josh came thought with flying colors.
Panthers QB Moore escapes serious injury (AP) - Determined to avoid injuries, Carolina Panthers coach John Fox decided not to play his starters in the final preseason game Thursday in Pittsburgh. But Fox had backup quarterback Matt Moore still in the game late in the third quarter behind a suspect backup offensive line -- until Moore was carted to the locker room after being hit in the legs and sacked by unblocked safety Anthony Smith.
Isenhour pleads no contest in hawk death (AP) - Pro golfer Tripp Isenhour has pleaded no contest to charges he faced for killing a protected hawk. Attorney David de Armas said Friday that Isenhour agreed to one year of supervised probation, four hours of anger management classes and 100 hours of community service. Forty hours must be performed at a wildlife or animal shelter.
Ginobili to have heel surgery next week (AP) - San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili, who helped lead Argentina to a bronze medal in the Beijing Olympics, will need surgery to repair a ligament injury in his left ankle. The Spurs said Friday that Ginobili will have surgery next week. The team will announce a timeline for his return after the surgery.
