Jankovic reaches first Grand Slam final (AP) -

Jelena Jankovic is finally a Grand Slam finalist. Overcoming a slow start, Jankovic used fantastic defense and steady groundstrokes to beat Olympic gold medalist Elena Dementieva 6-4, 6-4 Friday in the U.S. Open semifinals. "As you can see, I have tears in my eyes," Jankovic told the crowd during an on-court interview.


Bolt pulls past Powell to win windy 100m (AP) - Usain Bolt rallied against cold, wind and Asafa Powell to win the 100 meters in 9.77 seconds Friday at the Van Damme Memorial. Running against a strong headwind in his season finale, the three-time Olympic champion had a bad start and watched Powell go ahead. But Bolt pulled even with Powell and used his long strides to finish 0.08 off the world record he set at the Beijing Games.
Cowboys CB Newman questionable (AP) - Dallas Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman is listed as questionable for the season opener at Cleveland. Newman's uncertain status on Friday's injury report was another sign that Adam Jones may make his Dallas debut as a starter on Sunday. It will be Jones' first NFL game since the 2006 season. Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said this week that Jones would start if Newman wasn't in the lineup.
LPGA backs off English-only requirement (AP) -

Under increasing criticism, the LPGA Tour on Friday backed off plans to suspend players who cannot speak English well enough to be understood at pro-ams, in interviews or in making acceptance speeches at tournaments. ChiSox slugger Quentin has broken wrist (AP) - American League home run leader Carlos Quentin has a broken wrist, and the Chicago White Sox left fielder will have surgery Monday that could sideline him for the rest of the season. Quentin was removed from the lineup before Tuesday's game because of what the White Sox described then as a sore right forearm, and he hasn't played since.
Seahawks WR Branch to miss opener (AP) - The return of Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Deion Branch is going to wait at least a week. Coach Mike Holmgren says Branch will not play Sunday when the Seahawks open their season at Buffalo. Branch was trying to get back in time for the season opener just seven months after having major reconstructive surgery on his left knee.
Rangers All-Star Kinsler out for season (AP) - Texas Rangers All-Star second baseman Ian Kinsler will have season-ending surgery to repair a sports hernia. Kinsler last played Aug. 17, and an MRI the following day revealed the injury. Kinsler was hopeful of avoiding surgery and possibly playing again this season, but he remains sore and the Rangers said Friday he will have surgery next week.
Orioles' Trembley to return in 2009 (AP) - Dave Trembley will get another chance to coax a winning season out of the Baltimore Orioles in 2009. The Orioles announced Friday that they will bring Trembley back next season, exercising an option that was the contract he signed last year. The club also added a team option for 2010.
